I began my career working in corporate law and found myself really struggling to understand what career success meant for a woman. Through my own experiences being an ambitious, career driven woman with an innate desire to make a positive impact but feeling directionless, struggling with self doubt and lacking confidence, I formed a powerful passion for supporting women to truly thrive.
Meeting my business partner was the true catalyst that led me into the crazy and exhilarating world of entrepreneurship. My passion grew rapidly, which gave me enough courage to quit my stable corporate job and work towards brining One Roof to life full-time.
One Roof establishes industry first co-working spaces dedicated to women led ventures. We currently operate in Melbourne, Los Angeles and New York City. Our philosophy is to provide much more than on office space, by supporting female entrepreneurs in the three key areas: Mind, Body, & Business. We offer everything from meditation and wellness classes, to business strategy and coding workshops. At the core of everything we do, One Roof is about forging a supportive and thriving community of female entrepreneurs.
So many things!!
My co-founder moved to California shortly after we launched One Roof, so starting a business with a business partner who lives on the other side of the world is definitely the biggest challenge.
Despite the challenges of working with a geographical gap, battling different timezones and having to manage One Roof Australia basically on my own, I found a business partner who compliments me perfectly. We have refused to let the distance affect our ultimate vision, and instead have used it to our advantage by building a global brand with co-working spaces in multiple cities around the world, and forging a strong community of female entrepreneurs.
When you know instinctively that it’s the right fit you will make it work – no matter how great the challenge may be.
I think entrepreneurs live their lives moment to moment.
Every moment is something different, and most days I feel a sense of doubt, fear and struggle at some point.
I have different tactics depending on the extent to which I am feeling flat and uninspired:
I can always find inspiration in these moments
I think it was bloody courageous to stand up in front of a room full of 250 people and three judges to pitch my vision for One Roof in 3 minutes!
I was nominated as one of Australia’s top young innovators in 2015 by the Foundation for Young Australians and accepted as a participant in their Young Social Pioneer Program. I was selected as one of 6 finalists and the program culminated into a pitching competition hosted by The Foundation for Young Australians in conjunction with global chemistry brand BASF to celebrate BASF’s 150 year anniversary.
Once I stopped shaking I felt a real sense of accomplishment. Winning the competition was a massive bonus, and I managed to walk away with $10,000 in seed funding to support One Roof.
Everything we do has an impact and affect on others.
We are all inextricably connected. If we can live our lives authentically and according to our true values, then we give others the permission and inspiration to do the same.
